The leaders of your country come to your office and implore you not to print a story that reveals the ins and outs of an ongoing operation being utilized in the war on terror. It is clear that the program has been a success and it is also clear that the program is entirely legal.
Even Super-Hawk-War-Hero Jack Murtha implores you not to print the story.
But you print it anyway. WHY?
Some people would go so far as to say, "this is no big deal, Bush said years ago that one of the ways we would fight terror is by following the money trail".
True, but he didn't spell out in detail how we would go about doing that. In fact, many very high level bankers were completely unaware of the SWIFT program.
Clearly, the Bali Bomber wasn't aware of it, because that's how we captured him.
The real questions to ask:
What did the public gain by having this story published? NOTHING. Except to know that their government was using every possible resource at their disposal to fight the war on terror and they were doing it in a legal manner.
What did the terrorists gain from the publishing of this story? Certainly more than 'nothing'.
We are soooooooooo lucky that the New York Times didn't know we had cracked the Germans Enigma Code back in WWII.....they wouldn't have been able to resist the urge.
By the way, scroll down this page to the story of the NYT's retaliation against the WH.....

Stupid. The info was not classified. Even the "Wallstreet Journal" ran the same article but it is a conservative Republican paper. Why do you folks always fall for the bull?
There was an interesting article in Science Magazine this month. Using PET scan technology which has been used to track areas of the brain that are known to monitor certain activity, it's been shown clearly that bipartisan political discourse on either side of the coin utilizes two main areas:
* emotion
* binary decision making (yes / no)
You'll notice that there is no usage of the area responsible for logic and reasoning.
I eagerly anticipate the anti-science contingent. However, they will be handicapped in response because if they are going to try to undermine the scientific method, then they are barred from using any type of science or technology in responding.
I await the smoke signals and carrier pigeons.
The Walstreet Journal said money way being tracked. So what. We all knew that because the president said it in a public speech. The New York Times reveiled methods.
Loose lips sink ships.
The Swift program was unknown even to high level bankers. The Times revealed ALL the facts, how the operation worked and who was involved.
Here is a simple question:
Did revealing this information help the U.S. or did it hurt our intelligence operations? If you say it didnt hurt our intel at all, then you are clueless. The LA Times and the WSJ are also guilty but the real culprit is the traitor who leaded the info in the first place.
The methods were all known as well, and were all in the public domain. For several years.
I'm sure that the terriers know full well that their every move is being tracked.
I'm sorry that you feel a free press is a bad thing and that one who keeps watch on the machinations of the government gives you the shakes, Cliff, but there are a lot of us that appreciate it.
In other words, those of us who love our country and the constitution. As opposed to the Bush administration which hates both..

"The methods were all known as well, and were all in the public domain. For several years."
Bullshit. They only knew they we were tracking money, they did not know the specifics. If this was all general knowledge in the public domain, then why did the Times work on the story for over 3 months and place it on the front page above the fold?
I dont have anything against the free press but they have a responsibility to not endanger our security and clearly they did.
Apparently you would have been cheering the NYT in WWII if they had reported on our cracking the Germans' Enigma code. Afterall they would only be reporting on the 'machinations' of our govt.
If you really loved your country you wouldnt report secrets pertaining to operations that were clearly legal and WORKING.

Christina, you need to reconsider IE7.
Switch to Firefox.
Christina - Here is a simple trick that works on most PCs (not all laptops though)
Hit the control plus keys at the same time. It will enlarge the font on your screen. You can enlarge it to a comfortable size but ooops...
One size too big?
Control minus shrinks it.
Firefox is tops!
The left will even defend treason because they "Hate Bush"! - What a bunch of losers...
