I agree with elizabeth...life in prison is a way more sever punishment than death in this case. Death would have given him glory...he wanted death. Good call.
I read that the '72 virgins' thing, and martyrdom are reserved for those who die in battle. Supposedly, those who are captured by the enemy and executed are not worthy.
He won't die of old age.
He's going to go even crazier than he is now - he'll be sealed off from pretty much all human interaction for the rest of his days.
And then, at the end, he gets to die in prison. Hopefully he's buried in a pig carcass - or at least clutching a football.
